Whin (Gorse)
Whin is a Scots word for gorse, though you can hear it pronounced ‘funn’ in north-east Scotland. The flowers have a distinct sweet coconut smell and can be found at almost any season – hence the old rhyme about kissing being out of season when there are no flowers on the gorse. Flowering gorse in Scotland is at its very best in April and May and it’s the clan badge of Clan Sinclair and Clan MacLennan, though the notion of hairy Highlanders and body lotions somehow sits uncomfortably together….
